You can find some top quality fish and chips in North Devon, and arguably some of the best in the country. If you’re looking to sample the Great British staple of fish and chips, here are the best fish and chips that I’ve had in North Devon.
The Pelican, Barnstaple
Best for? Superb cod. Ours was soft, flaky and perfectly cooked, encased in a wonderfully light crispy batter. I’ve had nothing less than perfect cod every time I’ve ordered. The Pelican also works really hard to source fish sustainably and supports local businesses.

Squires, Braunton
Best for? Fantastic fish and chips and a tantalisingly tasty tartar sauce. The tartar sauce was the surprising star of the show for us. Many have said before that Squires does the best fish and chips in North Devon.

The Royal George, Appledore
Best for? A divine curry sauce. The flavour was amazing, and it was thinner than the thick chip shop style curry sauces I’ve had, which was a nice change.
They served chunky chips with the fish and chips, but I love the thin-cut fries they serve with other dishes. If you’re willing to break from tradition, you could try asking them to swap the chips for fries. Go on, be a rebel!
